Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered: A Revival of the Legendary Saga

Before diving into this review, I'd like to express my gratitude to Dan from Sandbox Strategies for providing me with a game key, and I take this opportunity to thank Nessa and Meagan Marie from Crystal Dynamics again for gifting me a key for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered last year.

Lara Croft's adventures have long been etched in video game history, and with the release of Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, fans can once again immerse themselves in the dark and captivating epics of the famous adventurer. Released on February 14, 2025, this remastered compilation of the next three games from the original Core Design series promises improved graphics, new features, and renewed nostalgia.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered includes three iconic titles:
- Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999)
- Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000)
- Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003)

This collection is developed by Saber Interactive and published by Aspyr Media. The improvements include:
- Remastered graphics with the ability to switch between classic and modern styles.
- Classic and modern controls for better accessibility.
- An enhanced photo mode with new options to capture your favorite moments.
- A Flyby Camera Maker, a new tool to allow players to create their own dynamic, cinematic shots, opening up a world of creative possibilities.
- Trophies and achievements to encourage exploration and replayability.

Diving back into these remasters is a return to the roots with a modern twist. The developers have managed to respect the soul of the originals, and the option to switch between graphic styles is a welcome addition.

The Last Revelation Remastered retains its charm with its complex puzzles and Egyptian environments that seem even more vibrant with updated textures. It's worth noting that the level The Times Exclusive has been added to these remasters, offering a new adventure to explore.

Chronicles Remastered offers a unique perspective on Lara through the eyes of her loved ones. The extraordinary remaster work on the breathtaking environments makes this game by far the most impressive of the three titles, closely followed by The Last Revelation Remastered.

The Angel of Darkness Remastered has benefited from impressive work on restored content, particularly in the game's first level, offering players a renewed and enriching experience. The restored abilities of Kurtis Trent, such as his chirugai and psychic shield, add a new dimension to the gameplay, making exploration and combat more dynamic. The new character models are simply superb, though some do not yet have a remastered version available.
It's clear that the developers were short on time for this title, due to a release date set for February 14 to celebrate Lara Croft's anniversary, when a few more months would have been welcome to polish the experience. However, there's no doubt that Saber Interactive and Aspyr Media will continue to enhance the game with future patches.

The photo mode has been significantly enhanced with a plethora of new poses to capture Lara in epic or tranquil moments. Additionally, the new Flyby Camera Maker tool is simply great and very intuitive to use, allowing even those less experienced to create stunning and personalized cinematics.

I would recommend players start with the other two titles, The Last Revelation and Chronicles Remastered, and wait for more improvements before diving into The Angel of Darkness Remastered to make that adventure even more memorable.

These remasters are an opportunity to rediscover these games with a modern sheen, while being aware that some aspects of these games are inseparable from their era. These remasters are generally more polished than their predecessors, especially the remasters of The Last Revelation and Chronicles, whose environments have been reworked and enriched with additional details. If you're a fan of the series or simply curious to see how these classics have aged over time, this collection is worth your attention.
